Join us on the farm to help tend crops, pull weeds, and many other farm tasks. Your time and energy supports the work of Owenwood Farm in growing food for the community!

Volunteers also get the benefit of learning more about how seasonal fruits and veggies grow, what it means to use organic and regenerative practices, and more about GROW North Texas' efforts to improve the local food system.

Please wear outdoor, weather-appropriate clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. Wear closed-toe shoes (sneakers or boots work best), and bring a water bottle (preferably reusable - there are water filling stations inside the Owenwood Neighbor Space building)).

All participants must complete the volunteer waiver which is available here.

Do you have a piece of equipment with a small engine that needs repair? Join us for this hands-on workshop! In the finale of our "Small Engine Repair" series, selected participants will bring their own equipment, along with the necessary tools and parts, to repair it under the guidance of instructor, Bobby Amaro. Those selected will receive one-on-one support as they work on their engines, while additional attendees are welcome to observe, ask questions, and learn from the process. Once all equipment is up and running, we’ll wrap up with a quick review on proper storage techniques to keep your machines in top shape. To qualify for one of the four one-on-one spots, email Bobby Amaro at: txmavs@yahoo.com the following information by September 14th:

- the make, model, and serial number of your equipment and what it is

- a description of what is wrong with the machine and how it broke

If more than 4 people request to bring a broken engine, all others will be notified when the slots are full.

The class will be held in and around the gym OR the metal workshop building at Owenwood Neighbor Space, 1451 John West Rd, Dallas. We'll confirm whether we will meet in the gym or the shed via email before class date. Park on the backside of the main building in the northwest corner. The metal building is visible from there. Wear closed-toe shoes and clothes you don't mind getting dirty. Bring a water bottle and whatever you need to be comfortable outdoors. A water fountain and bathrooms are available inside the main building.

In this webinar, Texas Center for Local Food staff will present key strategies for running a profitable farm business: financial record keeping, budgeting, and pricing for profitability. They will share practical resources to further your learning along with service providers who can help you do the heavy lifting. Whether you're just starting out or a few years in, setting up or improving your financial foundations can help you move from guesswork to informed decisions about what's really working in your business. All are welcome and please bring your questions!

MEET THE INSTRUCTORS:

Fred Henderson was born into a ranching family located in Double Bayou, Texas. Growing up, he developed a deep passion for cattle and land management, which led him to pursue continuing education in ranching. After completing his career in Corporate America, Fred returned to his family's ranch to assist his uncle on the family ranch. During this time, Fred focused on sustainable ranching practices, emphasizing the importance of land stewardship and animal welfare. After his uncle’s retirement in 2022, Fred and 4 of his cousins work together to operate the family ranch to leave a legacy for generations to come.

Biointensive agriculture is an organic agricultural system that focuses on achieving maximum yields from a minimum area of land, while simultaneously increasing biodiversity and sustaining the fertility of the soil. The goal of the method is long term sustainability and it is particularly effective for backyard gardeners and small-scale farms.

Greg Joel, the Farm Manager at Opal's Farm has implemented this practice at their operation I'm Ft. Worth and is willing to share the why's, tips, challenges and triumphs of transitioning the farm to bio intensive practices.

This workshop will take place outside, so please bring water, sunscreen and dress appropriately for walking around on a farm.

ABOUT OPAL'S FARM: Opal’s Farm, named after legendary community activist Opal Lee, who had a dream of an urban farm providing farm-fresh, nutritious food for residents of the city, has officially started working the five-acre urban farm east of downtown to address local food deserts and revitalize the health of local neighborhoods. Her desire to help those less fortunate find self-worth and purpose in an honest day’s labor for an honest wage is surpassed only by her desire for people to have access to healthy produce and nutritious food.

Are you a farmer or food grower who's curious about USDA programs? Register and spend the lunch hour with USDA Dallas Urban Office's NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Services) and FSA (Farm Service Agency) learning about the programs and resources available to small and urban farms. From land conservation to farm ownership loans, this two part series will cover some important topics across each agency.

USDA is made up of 29 agencies and offices who serve the American people at more than 4,500 locations across the country and abroad. USDA agencies help to keep America's farmers and ranchers in business and ensure that the nation's commercial supply of meat, poultry and egg products is safe wholesome and properly labeled.
