The mission of GROW North Texas is to connect North Texans to food, farms, and community to create a sustainable, secure regional food system that enriches the land, encourages economic opportunity through food and agriculture, and provides equitable access to healthy, nutritious food for all residents. We believe that everyone should have access to healthy, nutritious, culturally appropriate food.
GROW North Texas believes that everyone has the right to access food that facilitates healthy living. We also believe that sustainable systems make us more resilient to the challenges of our changing world. This is especially true in food systems. Healthy soil and diverse ecosystems not only withstand our North Texas weather challenges, but they also produce nutritious fruits, vegetables, and proteins.
Our current food system does not provide us with a sustainable system that allows everyone the access they deserve. We give thanks for previous generations of people who built their own systems of distribution, knew how to work with the natural cycles of nature, and shared abundance with their neighbors. We benefit from that existing knowledge and seek to redevelop the local and regional food systems that once existed.
A local food system provides all the parts of the food system within a reasonable distance from residents within the system boundaries. A local food system can be a neighborhood, a city, a county, or a region. The diagram below represents the system and all of its parts.
