Meet The Instructors:
Kevin Burns has been gardening for over 20 years. His passion for gardening began shortly after he and his wife were married and toured some formal gardens in Germany on their honeymoon. When he got home, he realized their backyard consisted of turf, a mimosa tree, and a chain link fence. He developed a plan for turning their yard into a pleasurable garden and it’s been evolving ever since.
Kevin and his wife own a small 55-acre ranch in the Texas Hill Country outside of Fredericksburg which they run as a Bed and Breakfast. The property is a designated Wildlife Management Area. Along with providing sustenance to the native wild animals living on the property, they plant 25-75 new native trees and sow native grasses and wildflowers annually in an effort to return the property to its natural pre-cattle ranching state.
Toni Leitgab is a native Dallasite who loves plants. She grew up listening to Howard Garrett on the radio and watching her grandmother pickle vegetables from her garden. She later bought her first houseplant and planted her first veggie patch in college in Denton in 2000. Since then she’s had houseplants and gardens everywhere she’s lived – from State College, Pennsylvania to Long Island, New York, to Houston and back to Dallas again. Toni worked for independent garden centers for several years and has taken numerous courses on indoor and outdoor gardening. She is currently working towards becoming a certified Dallas County Master Gardener. Toni’s favorite thing about gardening is there’s always a beautiful plant you haven’t seen before and always more to learn!
Kelly Shockley is a Dallas County Master Gardener with a passion for creativity, education, and community service. A lifelong maker and teacher - she shares her expertise in home gardening, preserving, and crafting by making and leading classes on jams, jellies, vinegars, herb salts, and specialty oils. She has recently been recognized for her skills - winning four State Fair ribbons for her culinary creations.
Beyond the garden, Kelly enjoys quilting, restoring vintage furniture, and designing interiors. She finds joy in tending to the DCMG vineyards, demonstration gardens, and teaching her children and grandchildren to grow and create.
