BIRD HOUSE BUILD

July 30, 2024
Owenwood Farm and Neighbor Space GYMNASIUM
1451 John West Road Dallas, Texas
6:00PM-8:00PM

Have fun and learn how bluebirds can help your farm while you practice basic carpentry skills!

Jake Poinsett, Trinity River Audubon Center Education Manager, will detail the benefits of bluebirds. Bluebirds eat many insects that are considered pests of gardens and crops. He will also explain the best place to install the house and how to take care of it each season.

Brandon Iker, farmer and craftsman, will help you build a bluebird house. You will measure and cut wood, learn how to use common power tools, and construct your own bluebird house to take home!

Bring work gloves and safety glasses if you have them. Wear closed-toed shoes and dress properly for woodworking. All the building materials will be provided.

PLEASE BE ADVISED WOOD CUTTING WILL TAKE PLACE OUTDOORS AND ASSEMBLY WILL TAKE PLACE INDOORS!

The class will be in the gym at Owenwood Neighbor Space, 1451 John West Rd, Dallas from 6-8 PM. A water fountain and water bottle fill station are available.

Park behind the building and take the wooden ramp to enter through the double doors. Turn right and the short hallway will lead you to the gym.

Meet the Instructors:

Jake Poinsett is the Education Manager at the Trinity River Audubon Center. He has enjoyed 11 years in the conservation field with South Carolina Park Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife, and now the National Audubon Society. He is passionate about native plants, reptiles and amphibians, and of course birds. When he is not geeking out about birds at work, he is geeking out about birds outside of work… he loves birds!

Brandon Iker, PhD. has a wealth of knowledge in urban and rural small farm operations, sustainability, and water quality. Brandon’s workshops combine deep scientific insights with practical, real-world applications. He's worked on a farm for 10 years and holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the University of Arizona. He also earned dual B.S. degrees in Ecology and Molecular Biology from Northern Kentucky University.

This workshop is funded through USDA FSA Cooperatives Program, award number: FSA23CPT0012854
