Perennial Fruit Workshop: Trellis and Tree Training

Join GROW North Texas at Fort Worth Presbyterian Church for a workshop on perennial fruit trellising and tree training. The workshop will go over how to build a trellis for blackberries with schematics included. There will be a demonstration of how to properly plant the blackberry plants as well.

Secondly, on-site orchard steward, Anne, will share her top tips for training fruit trees, and how she has made tree weights affordably and easily! There will be a hands-on demonstration of how to make tree training weights which improve branch angles and overall tree structure! Participants will go home with their own tree weights to use in their garden or at a community fruit tree orchard where they volunteer.

About Guest Speaker:

Anne Santana serves as Project Director with Made Greene School Garden Services which serves the larger school garden community through educator professional development, garden development and maintenance and onsite education lessons for children.  She also serves a Board Member of Tarrant County Food Policy Council.

After a career in museum education, Anne Santana had the exhilarating opportunity to renew a school garden and develop and lead a STEM-based garden program at a Fort Worth ISD public school.   Each week she interacts with over 200 school children in hands-on learning experiences that deepen their understanding of the natural world and connect them deeply to the food they eat.   The concepts they learn in the indoor classroom literally come alive in the school garden.  She manages two Giving Grove orchards and is currently fascinated with how to prune fruit trees to keep them accessible to the community.
